Reaction & Review | 2020: Texas Gladiators

2020 Texas Gladiators (1982) | Cult Celebrities

Welcome, one and all, to an all new Reaction & Review. Tonight, guys, I'm taking a look at an Italian sci-fi action movie from 1982. That movie is "2020: Texas Gladiators."

I'm going to tell you, guys, I literally know almost nothing about this movie, other than what I have picked up from the plot synopsis. Which is about two different groups of warriors or bandits, not totally sure which, who are battling against each other in a post-apocalyptic version of Texas. Which, sounds sorta interesting.

The only other thing that I do know about this movie is that this movie was released under a couple of different titles. One of them called "Year 2020: Gladiators of the Future". Another one I know being titled as "2020: Freedom Fighters". And the last, which I swear this title is too long for this movie, which is called "2020: The Rangers of Texas and Sudden Death". I'm not joking, that is what one of those titles is called. Honestly, I don't think I could even fit that last title, because I was barely able to fit "Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie" in my last Reaction & Review.

However, I'm going to watch the version that came out in the U.S. So hopefully, this will be pretty good. And the only way I'm going to know that, is if I shut up, and I push play, and I'm going to do that right now. So, without further ado, it's time to kick back, relax, and check out "2020: Texas Gladiators".

11 minutes later

Well, guys, I can tell you two things right now. The dialogue, so far, is complete shit. Nobody here sounds like a human being. It's as if the person who wrote this has never heard a human being speak in their entire life. And two, the sound-mix is horrible. I certainly hope that this movie will get better as it goes on, but right now, I'm beginning to have my doubts.

12 minutes later

So that guy shot her in the head with, I guess, what looks like some sort of modified sniper rifle. The motorcycle gang retreats, and her body hasn't fallen off and has laid there completely still on the gang leader's back as he rides off. Somehow, I don't think that's how body physics work, but I'm going to let that one slide.

13 minutes later

You know, I get this scene is suppose to be sad because our hero is now dead. But guess what? I don't care. I don't care because, this movie has not given me a reason to care about anyone in this movie so far, because all of them have been shallow and lifeless.

17 minutes later

All right. I gotta question, and this is a serious one. Is anything interesting going to happen in this movie? Like, at all? We are almost an hour into this movie and I have yet to be given a reason as to why anything is happening or why any of these shallow as shit characters are being slave driven against their will, or I should say 'were' since they are now making an escape. And yet still, I have still have no reason to care. Thankfully, there's still a little over a half an hour left, so maybe the movie might get interesting at that point. Doesn't have to be good. Just something interesting.

19 minutes later

You know, guys, at this point, I just want this movie to end. Our heroes just recruited a group of Indians with possibly the laziest fight in the entire movie. Then again, nothing in this movie has been what I would even call halfway interesting. This movie has been boring as shit and there's still ten minutes to go.

The Review

Well, guys, that was "2020: Texas Gladiators". I'm gonna shut that shit off...my god that was boring. Where to even start? Well, when in doubt, start with the writing.

I'm almost convinced that there was no script for this. Because there was nothing to work with here. None. The story here borders on plotless because we have no interesting characters to help give the viewer a reason to care about anything that's going on. You would think that a story involving a bunch of these warriors trying to back this town in a post-apocalyptic Texas would sound somewhat promising. Instead, we have characters who, first of all, almost every character in this movie goes nameless. None of these characters have any depth or personality to speak of, because, as I stated before, the viewers are given no reason to care about anything that's going on throughout the movie.

The only character names I can remember are Nisus and Jack. Jack has no character to speak of, and Nisus, who despite the fact is one of our leading characters, has no character depth as well. The closest to any motivation is that a bunch of soldiers are lead by this Russian general and they deem themselves as the World Order. And as soon as they take over the town along with it's people, that's where the story comes to a dead stop. Nothing happens beyond that and it renders this story completely meaningless. And the only reason I know that the main female character is named Nisus is because as soon as I stopped the movie, the credits were showing the cast list as it was scrolling up.

The only thing that Nisus had going for her was that she had a husband, whom we follow at the start of the movie, as he and a bunch of these warriors are killing these religious cults, and one of these warriors named Catch Dog, and no, and I'm not joking, that's his really his name, sees our female lead and attempts to rape her. But he's then stopped by our nameless hero and tells him that he broke the code and thus kicks him out of the group. And thus it follows him for a bit as he and a pack of survivors attempt to rebuild civilization in this small rundown town. The only thing he had going for him was that he had a wife and a small daughter. And as soon as he dies, and then it follows a different group of warriors inside this bar, but by the point our hero died, I just stopped caring because the movie refused to go into any depth of these characters, and I'm going to use the term 'characters' as loosely as I can at this point. Because no one here was given anything to work with, because there was no writing to begin with. The only way I could even suggest that there was a story was that someone, who instead of giving the cast any script to work with, decided to give them bullet points on what to do and say and tried to improvise everything that went on. And they failed at that as well.

And with that, I may as well go straight into acting. What acting? Nobody was given any kind of character to work with, so everyone in this movie decided to phone in their performances because none of them know how to improv. Not only that, but it seemed like the actors in this movie have never acted a day in their lives, because it literally sounds like the director of this movie decided to say that "You get one take. And if it sucks, screw it, then we'll just green-light it." While I'm on the subject of acting, there are also some actors who had to loop in their dialogue because I'm going to assume that some of the actors in this movie natively didn't speak English. One big example I can give is one of the Indians towards the end of the movie, where the actor is speaking but the person who dubbed over his line didn't match anything with the actor's mouth movements. However, I'm going to blame some of that on this movie being a bad dub, because when the U.S. was dubbing foreign films and television from the late 70's and early 80's, we did not care if our dubs were terrible. We just put it out there in hopes no one would see how bad our dubs were back then. So I'm going to cut the acting a little bit of slack.

I want to go back to writing, because seeing as how I mentioned the Indians, this movie refuses to give out any timestamps on how long certain events take place. Such as after the World Order takes over and Nisus has been sold off to slavers. Or how long it took our heroes to meet the Indians and try to recruit them, which I should mention, they try to recruit them within the last 15 minutes of the movie, which tells me that this movie does not feel finished. It seems to me that the people who worked one this movie tried to release it as fast as possible, which makes sense seeing as how this thing was, most likely, improv'd. It probably would've worked better if they did it one of two ways.

One. Expand the movie to about 30 minutes. Because maybe then they would've had more time to try and develop these lifeless characters and give the viewer any kind of reason as to why they are trying to take back their town from the World Order. I doubt that would've been possible, but still, it probably would've helped if the movie was almost 2 hours long. Or two. Put the scene with our nameless heroes trying to recruit these
Indians somewhere in the middle of the movie. That way, we wouldn't have to rush the fact that we suddenly have Indians in the movie with only 15 minutes to go. And I guess that's one of the other biggest flaws that this movie has is it's runtime. The movie is less than an hour and a half long. And after watching this, I totally see why this movie felt rushed. Because trying to cram all this stuff into an hour and 25 minutes doesn't help.

Now I could sit here for hours discussing all of the failings of this movie's writing, or lack thereof. But I need to move on and talk about the rest of this movie's problems. And I'm going to talk about something I don't think I've ever talked about, which is props. Well, first of all, the costumes here are cheap, however I want to talk about the firma shields. Because around the first half of the film, we see the Russian general's soldiers with these shields that literally look like if it was just tin foil shaped like a shield and nothing else was covering the middle, which it was. And we are told straight up that these shield are basically bullet proof, and yet the best that they could come up with was just tin foil shields with nothing else covering them. That's really all I wanted to mention in terms of props, but basically, the shields here look cheap as hell. Which, I totally understand that this was probably filmed on a low budget. And I'm curious to know how much it really was. If this movie cost more than $10,000 or even $20,000, then someone needs to be fucking ashamed of themselves, because there is no excuse for this movie to be this lazy with their props, and of course, writing among other things. But hey, I'm probably thinking too hard about that.

Now on to sound-mix. I mentioned at the start of this Reaction & Review that the sound-mix was horrible, and that's exactly where it stayed. Because whenever the actors are speaking, at times, you can barely hear what the actors are saying, almost as if they were whispering their lines, which probably happened a few times. It probably would've helped if the person in charge of the sound editing actually picked up the actors dialogue, but they couldn't even do that, thus we are left with moments where the sound is too quiet and the sound is too loud. Though to be fair, the latter doesn't happen too often. But still, the sound-mix is just pig shit. Speaking of sound, I need to cover sound effects, and that's mainly when guns have to be fired. For whatever baffling reason, the foley artists thought that adding laser sounds to whenever guns are being fired was a good idea. Now, that might not have been a bad idea if this movie were set in a futuristic setting. However, that's not the case. Instead, we have certain guns being fired and not a single one of them are laser guns. I don't know if it was suppose to give the filmmakers the idea that it's set in the future, or they wanted to just put it in there because it sounded cool. But either way, the sound effects here could've been done without the use of the laser shots.

I really can't talk much about special effects other than the firma shields sparking purple electricity and that also looked kinda cheap. The music really sucks because it almost feels like it's the same song being looped over while trying to sound different each time. But it's mostly the same, bland, 80's kinda techno music that really doesn't work here and it sounds like shit.

Ultimately, guys, am I able to recommend "2020: Texas Gladiators"? No. This movie sucks. I can't recommend it as a mindless action film. I can't even recommend it as film you could watch with friends on a bad movie night and make fun of it. This movie has nothing going for it. If you seriously have to watch it, it's on YouTube right now. However, I do not recommend doing it because it is an hour and 25 minutes that you will never get back.

And with that, we come to the close of another Reaction & Review. Until next time, ladies and gentlemen, take care, and I will see you all in the near future. Peace.

Reaction & Review | Sonic the Hegehog: The Movie

Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie (1996) - Kazunori Ikegami, Gary ...

Welcome, one and all, to an all new Reaction and Review. Tonight guys, I'm going to be covering a Japanese animated OVA from 1996. Tonight, I'm taking a look at "Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie".

Now, I have been a fan of Sonic the Hedgehog for roughly the last 20 years. Maybe a little longer than that. I have played most of the games, I have seen various episodes of "Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog" from the mid-90's. I have seen "Sonic X" at least a dozen times back when it was airing on Saturday mornings back in either 2003 or 2004, not totally sure which year it came out in. And while I haven't kept up with the series in say the last 5 years or so, I still eventually go back and replay some of my favorite games from back in the day from time to time. My own username kinda gives it away, at least until I decide to change it for some goofy reason.

Now as for this movie, I have never seen it. I have seen clips of this movie before, which was years ago, and if those clips are anything like this movie has made them out to be, then I may be in for a, possibly, bizarre ride. Or it could totally suck. I'm not totally sure if this takes place in any cartoon universe, or if it's just a standalone film. I did mention this was an OVA, so it's basically two episodes stitched together to turn it into a 54 minute movie. So the good news is that if this movie sucks, at least my pain will be short and sweet. But who knows? This movie could totally shock me and actually wind up being halfway decent.

But the only way I'm going to know that for sure is if I shut up and I push play, and I'm going to do that right now. So, without further ado, it's time to kick back, relax, and check out "Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie"

4 minutes later

Well guys, one thing I can tell you this much, so far; the voice acting in this movie is terrible. I understand it's still very early in this movie, but if this is the kind of acting I have to get use, then I fear it's going to be torturous.

11 minutes later

All right, well, I can say this much about this movie. As horrible as the voice acting is, the music is fantastic. It really does sound like it came from the video games and I'm absolutely digging it.

5 minutes later

OK...so Metal Robotnik has bat-wings. That's sorta different. But still kinda cool, though.

2 minutes later

Wait, so now Metal Robotnik is shooting, I guess what looks to be some sort of sticky glue out of it's ass. That...was something I didn't need to know. It was a little a bit disgusting, guys. I'm not going to lie.

16 minutes later

All right. I just want to go ahead and say this now. I'm really beginning to despise Sara. She's been nothing but a whiny bitch throughout this entire movie and it's really starting to aggravate me. I hope Robotnik just throws her off so she falls and breaks her neck. I totally understand that's never going to happen, but it would make this movie a little bit more watchable. Just thought I'd share that with you guys.

7 minutes later

Wait...is Sara going to actually fall to her doom? Oh please, please, let her fall. Then nothing of value would be lost...aw, damn it. Knuckles had to ruin the moment. But I did call Sara falling, almost, so at least I can give myself a little bit of marks there.

The Review

Thank god it's over. Well guys, that was "Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie". I'm gonna shut that off...OK. You know, I was really hoping for this movie to be better then what I expected, but it really wasn't. Because when I saw those clips years ago, I kinda figured I was in for kind of a stupid ride, and I got it. But it's still a little bit too stupid, even for me.

I guess I should start with writing. The writing here kinda sucks. Let me try to summarize the story as best as I can. So Robotnik has taken the President and his daughter, Sara, hostage. He explains to Sonic and Tails that he was driven out of his home city of Robo-tropolis by something known as Metal Robotnik. I want to touch upon Metal Robotnik for just a moment, because when Sonic and Tails first encounter Metal Robotnik, I can already tell you the identity of Metal Robotnik because the movie telegraphs it about almost 10 minutes beforehand, and if you telegraph it that far in advance, then it's not a surprise to anyone.

But anyway, getting back to writing. So Sonic accepts the task as he and Tails goes to the inner dimension of Planet Freedom. Now, because I don't have a ton of knowledge about the classic Sonic games, I'm going to assume that Planet Freedom was a thing back then before the modern games basically scrapped it, so I won't complain about how that world works too much, but I will say that I do not recall ever remembering another dimension to Planet Freedom. I always thought it was basically just their own version of Earth. But again, that's just me not having much knowledge about how Sonic's world worked back then.

Basically, to shorten the plot, Robotnik's big scheme is that he has created Metal Sonic, in which he uses it to steal Sonic's life data so that he can destroy Sonic once and for all. Which OK, that's fine in terms of Sonic plots. I'm not asking for something ultra deep. However, I think it would be better if the characters were, in some way, likable. But they aren't.

Sonic, for whatever reason here, acts more like a dick in this movie than anything I have ever seen in my times of watching "Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog", "Sonic X", or playing any of the games. I mean, OK, I know that his character trait is that he is snarky and is somewhat dickish. However, that has been cranked up here to a tee. It doesn't help that his acting really sucks here, however, I'm going to cover acting in just a moment.

Sara is a whiny bitch who serves no purpose here other than being some dumb damsel in distress, who for whatever reason, travels with Robotnik because she wanted to 'take a drive'. And from there, she ends up being incredibly useless next to Robotnik, whom I should mention wants to marry Sara after Metal Sonic destroys Sonic and his friends. Don't ask why, it's sort of a stupid subplot. You could sorta tell I fucking hated Sara and wished a quick and painless death. But unfortunately, that didn't happen. And as much hate as people gave Princess Elise for her uselessness of getting kidnapped, at least there, it sorta worked, and Elise served more of a purpose in "Sonic 06" than anything Sara does in this movie.

Now before, I did say that the writing kinda sucked, but after talking about it for a bit, the writing here really sucks. However, when compared to certain other plots synopsis' within the Sonic lore, that isn't really saying a whole lot.

It also doesn't help that the voice acting is horrible. I totally understand that fans of Sonic have always bitched about the voice acting when the "Sonic Adventure" games made their debut, but this honestly is some of the worse voice acting I have heard in a long time. The worst of it comes from whoever voices Tails. I can't believe I would ever say this, but Tails voice is worse here than what was heard in "Sonic Heroes"! I didn't think Tails could sound worse than that, but somehow, this movie proved me wrong. And nobody else here turns in even a halfway decent showing. However, I'm going to blame more of that on the writing, because you can only do so much when you're given a script that is this bad.

Moving onto animation. The animation here looks a bit cheap, however I can't say that it looks awful because I have seen quite a bit of cartoons from the 90's that had cheap animation, some of which looked a bit worse than this movie has, so I'm going to give animation here a bit of a pass. But I do need to talk about mouth flaps. Since this was a Japanese animated OVA, the one thing you do have to worry about when dubbing a movie is that you want to match what the voice actors are saying along with the character's mouth flaps. And for the most part, it's fine. But there are a ton of moments in the movie where the character's mouths start moving for about a half second before the voices start officially talking. Now this may be a technical issue on my end, or it might've been the version of the movie that I watched on YouTube. But I did notice quite a number of moments of the characters mouth's moving before the voices start to pick up. Now again, this is honestly a minor issue and most people aren't going to notice it unless they were looking for it. And I did, so take it for what you will.

The music here is fantastic. But considering that it's Sonic we're talking about here, the music will, most of the time, sound great no matter what game or TV show it's coming from. The music in this movie is almost kind of a mixture with what you would hear in the classic Sonic games from the early 90's to "Sonic Adventure". In fact, I think this movie might've been released around the time of "Sonic Adventure" when it was being released for the SEGA Dreamcast. But either way, the music in this movie is really good and that's something I'm always happy to hear.

So with all that being said, am I able to recommend "Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie"? Unless you either have a morbid curiosity like I did, or if you have kids or knows someone who does have kids, then they are going to adore this. Because this is technically a children's film, most children aren't going to notice any of the flaws that I have mentioned. However, if you're someone like me who's been a Sonic fan since say...the early 2000's and you've never watched this movie and are curious of checking it out. Then personally, no. This is quite possibly one of the worst movies in involving Sonic I have had the displeasure of watching. And I know someone's going to ask me if I'm going to see the current live action Sonic movie. No. I am never wasting the time on it because that movie looked terrible even before fans started bitching about Sonic's design. And if you were to force me to pick either the live action movie or the OVA at gunpoint, I would take the OVA every time because at least this movie was short and it would only take about 54 minutes compared to the 1 hour and 40 minute run-time of the live action movie. But still, this movie was crap and I'm kinda happy I was able to watch this thing once. Now I don't have to worry about watching this thing ever again.

I'm gonna go find something else to do. I think I'll go marathon the first eight episodes of "Power Rangers: Lightspeed Rescue" on DVD, because I haven't watched that series in almost 10 years and I kinda need something good to watch.

Anyway, with that, we come to the close of another Reaction and Review. Until next time, ladies and gentlemen, take care, and I will see you all in the near future. Peace.

Reaction & Review | The Neighbor No. Thirteen

The Neighbor No. 13 (2005) - MyDramaList

Welcome, one and all, to an all new Reaction & Review. Tonight, guys, I'm checking out a Japanese horror movie from 2005. That movie is "The Neighbor No. Thirteen."

I'm gonna tell you, guys, I really don't know much about this movie, other than that it involves some guy who has a split-personality who kills people. Which sounds interesting. The only other thing I have picked up on this movie is that it's based off of a manga called "Tokyo Tribes." I should mention that I have never read "Tokyo Tribes", so if this movie is any good, I may go out and buy the manga that this thing claims to be based off of.

I don't know if this movie will stand out on it's own or not, but the only way I'll know that for sure, is if I shut up, and I push play, and I'm gonna do that right now. So, without further ado, it's time to kick back, relax, and check out "The Neighbor No. Thirteen."

19 minutes later

OK, I have a stupid question. Who keeps their spare apartment key in their mailbox? I would honestly expect something more sensible like putting it under a carpet or carrying it with them when you go out, but putting it inside your mailbox seems really irresponsible to me.

20 minutes later

Well, guys, I do have some good news. Juzo's split-personality killer has finally killed his first victim. Bad news? Took him only about 40 minutes to get there, but hey, at least he's finally gotten a kill under his belt. Yeah...so far, the pacing on this thing is a bit hideous.

8 minutes later

OK, I think I may have found a problem with this split-personality story. So this is the second time that Seki has seen our split personality killer. He doesn't freak out about the fact that his left eye is messed up greatly or his noticeable facial hair. He's even told by Juzo's split personality HIMSELF that he isn't Juzo. And Seki doesn't react to this at all. Don't you think that if you saw someone with a split-personality, or that his eye is fucked up or that he magically has facial hair, you would react differently in this kind of situation and try to call for help? I totally understand that he's probably going to end up dead in a few moments, but I'm pretty sure I would at least try to react differently to it instead of just letting the situation play out normally. It just feels really off to me.

7 minutes later

So, hold on a second here. She's going to ask Juzo, who's she's met all of twice, mind you, to watch over her son so that way she and her husband can go see a movie. I'm sorry, guys, but I wouldn't ask someone who you barely know anything about to ask them to watch over their only kid. It just sounds really stupid. Just thought I would share that with you, guys.

15 minutes later

All right, this is the third time that this movie has pulled this shit off. This is the third kill our killer has made and it's done off camera. This movie is so fucking cheap, it hurts. And I got almost another hour of this crap to sit through. This is really gonna suck, guys.

Does it even matter anymore?

Wait, wait, wait! Wait a fucking second here. So, the first victim from way early on in the film was behind on his rent for six months. Are you telling me that this guy has been dead for possibly six months and NOBODY around the apartment noticed, like, a horrible smell? Because I'm pretty sure if a dead body was still in an apartment it would give off a really horrible odor and that someone would've noticed it. Guys, the logic in this movie is really starting to grate on me and I cannot wait until this stupid thing is done.

The Review

Well, guys, that was "The Neighbor No. 13." Let's...shut that off. My god. That ending made no fucking sense. Anyway, I may as well get into the review of this thing. As I mentioned at the start, this movie is based off a manga called "Tokyo Tribes." I'm sincerely hoping that the manga has more depth and personality than this fucking movie has, because our characters are about as likable as a styro-foam cup. In fact, I'm going to give you the basic rundown with all of our characters that we follow.

We have Akai, who is the head of a construction job, does not develop any kind of personality from the time he was in school to when he is an adult. Even though he has gotten a job, has a wife, a son, and an apartment to live in, he is still the same the douchebag from back when he was younger, all the way up to his adult life. Juzo, who was viciously bullied as a kid while in school by these bullies lead by Akai, is completely personality-free once he is an adult and he is basically an afterthought once our split-personality shows up. I will talk about his split-personality in just a second. I wish I could tell you about Akai's wife or son, Yuki. But they are as bland as everyone else in this movie. And there's also Seki, who I thought was going to play more of a role in this movie, but, and this may or may not be a spoiler, but he's the second victim of the split-personality killer.

Anyway, going back to the story. So, years later when Juzo has grown up, he gets a job as a construction worker and, what do you know, the head of this construction team is lead by Akai. And when Akai starts bullying him again, as Juzo is doing his job, it's somewhere during that point that he somehow develops this split-personality and begins to kill anyone who gets in his way. And you would think that the movie would become interesting, and in the hands of a competent writer, that would be the case. But no. Our killer is about as shallow and lifeless as every other character in this movie. Now, I'm not expecting mountains of depth from these characters. But when you are making a horror movie, you want to at least give the viewer a reason to care about what happens when Juzo's split-personality starts killing people. When you make your characters unlikable douchebags such as Akai, his wife, or their son, who at one point in the movie, gets kidnapped by Juzo's split-personality, then you don't care what happens to them, because you are hoping that the split-personality killer kills everyone of these sacks of shits off. And it probably would matter more, if I gave even half a rat's ass about any of these characters. But this movie couldn't even do that much.

I would like to touch upon Juzo's split-personality for a moment longer. Not only is he boring and shallow as every other character in this movie is, but every single kill in this movie, is that, first of all, I can tell you how many kills our split-personality has made in just one hand. And that wouldn't have been so bad, except, and I'm not even joking when I say this, every single kill in this movie is done completely off camera. Correction, there is one kill that is kinda done on camera, and that is when the split-personality killer is killing his next victim in the bathroom at a carnival. The problem is that once he starts killing the victim, the camera is focusing on the back of our killer and you can't really tell if he's either beating the victim to death or pulling out his intestines because this movie is too fucking cheap with it's special effects.

And, I may as well jump into special effects because this is something that I thought was going to be the highlight of the film. Because when I read that the plot involved a split-personality killer, I genuinely thought it was going to show how creative and brutal our killer was going to be. But instead, it only shows you the aftermaths of our victims. In which, all of it looks cheap and lazily done. And to show that the people who worked on the special effects didn't care at all, at one point, we see the split-personality killer carry with him a bag which shows his final victim, and I won't try to spoil who that victim is on the off chance you actually want to check this movie out for yourselves. When he lays the bag down, you can see that the victim is covered in a plastic baggy and as the camera zooms on the dead body itself, you can clearly see that the arm that's sticking out is a plastic doll arm. Which tells me that the people who worked on this movie couldn't be bothered to either cover up the arm, or they could've gotten off their lazy asses and make an arm model that clearly looks as if it didn't come from a $5 toy doll.

Now, I could go on more about how bad the special effects are, but I have to move on and cover the rest of this movie. But basically, guys, special effects in this movie are a massive disappointment. Now let's get to the acting. Well, I did watch the English dub for this movie and the dub here is passable. There are two, however, I need to comment on. First is the voice actress who voiced Yuki; the son. She easily turns in the worst showing here, and I totally understand that when you are voicing a child, you are not expecting much, however I was at least expecting something halfway decent, and she failed miserably. The other one who I need to comment is, actually, a voice I recognized, because he is a well established voice actor. And he goes by the name of Yuri Lowenthal. Now I know that Yuri has shown to me that he can act, but out of every performance I have heard from him voicing in video games, cartoons, and what have you, this is honestly his worst performance, because it really sounds like he was just phoning in his dialogue just so he could get that quick paycheck and move on with whatever else he had lined up. But beyond that, the dub is OK, but honestly, I think you could just benefit from watching this subtitled, provided that you have any interest in watching this movie.

I want to go back to writing for a moment, because I barely touched upon writing outside of our shallow as shit characters. This movie has a ton of logic issues. Not even plot holes, just logic issues that lack any common sense. For instance, when Akai's wife goes to check on Juzo at his apartment, he doesn't answer the door and just goes back to her own apartment. Because instead of worrying about that her son may be potentially missing right then and there, and immediately telling Akai about it, she instead greets him as he's coming home and proceeds to give him a blowjob. Because why worry about telling Akai about their son still not home, when you can instead just attempt to suck off your husband. And when they DO eventually figure out that their son has been kidnapped, the wife doesn't do shit for the rest of the movie while Akai is off going after Juzo's split personality killer to get their son back. While I'm on the subject of the wife, what gave her the idea to let Juzo look after their son while she and Akai go off to see a movie? Wouldn't it make more sense to call someone, like a relative, to look after Yuki, since they are going off together for the evening? I totally understand, then, that we wouldn't have a movie, but damn it, it makes much more since then to do any of the nonsensical bullshit that she does here. She's probably the dumbest character in the entire movie, second only to either Akai or Juzo's split-personality killer.

There is one other thing that bothered me in terms of logic issues, and I brought this up during the reaction portion of the movie. When Seki sees Juzo's split-personality and is told that he wasn't Juzo, he doesn't react in anyway. Now at the time when I was watching it, I thought Seki was going to have more of a role here, because we are told during the first-third of the movie that Seki is also being bullied at the construction job that he's working along with Juzo by Akai, who somehow got to be the boss of the job, but that's not really important. So anyway, Seki is being bullied as well, and when he and Juzo were talking, I thought that maybe he and the split-personality killer were going to join forces and get revenge on Akai for all of the abuse that they have been getting from him. But no, instead, Juzo's split-personality just kills him and ruined what could've potentially been the most interesting part of the movie. Guys, there is so much wrong with this movie in terms of it's writing, but I would be here for another day talking about all of these logic issues this movie has. But I'm going to cut it short and say that the writing here is shit and just move on from there.

Animation. Yes guys, I actually have to talk about animation in a live action movie. Because there is a short sequence in the movie where Seki, who is inside's Juzo's apartment with him, shows Juzo his art-book. And it transitions to an animation where it's taken from Seki's comic and the animation looks great. I really like the art-style and how the character animations move, and honestly, I wish we could've seen more of that than what we got as our actual plot. But for what it is, the animation looks great and I can honestly say it's the biggest positive from this movie.

Camerawork, minus the off screen kills, is done competently well. The lighting is well lit. The music, eh, the music is forgetful as it's mostly there to build up suspense and tension, what little there is, but at least it does it's job. And...that's really it in terms of positives. And it's pretty sad that the only genuine positive that I can pull from this movie is that the short animation sequence was great and the technical stuff is fine.

So ultimately, am I am able to recommend "The Neighbor No. Thirteen"? No. This movie was a massive disappointment and is by far one of the worst horror movies I have ever seen. But it's not the worst horror movie I have seen. That honor, right now anyway, goes to "Curse of the Puppet Master". But this still doesn't stop this movie from having lazy special effects, a dub that is average at best, writing that suffers from so many logic issues. And not only that, but this movie has a lot of down time where nothing happens. And the only movie I can think of at the top of my mind that has worse down time than this movie is, once again, "Curse of the Puppet Master". I'm just...really disappointed, because we could've had a really interesting movie. And, as I said earlier, in the hands of a competent writer, it probably could've been great, but instead, we got nothing but boring, nonsensical bullshit for an hour and 50 minutes. Now, I need to find something else to do. And you know what? I just recently downloaded the Ace Attorney Trilogy on my New Nintendo 3DS, so I'm going to go play that, because at least that thing has better writing and more suspense than this turd of a movie has.

Anyway, with that, we come to the close of another Reaction & Review. Until next time, ladies and gentlemen, take care, and I will see you all in the near future. Peace.
