Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to the "Kaiju Marathon" here on Reaction & Review. Tonight, guys, I'm gonna be checking out a film from 1971. That movie is "Godzilla vs. Hedorah".
Now I'll let you guys know right up front that I know almost nothing about the monster Godzilla is facing. Shit, I barely know anything about any of the other foes that Godzilla has faced, aside from the obvious ones like King Ghidorah, Mothra, and MechaGodzilla to name a few. I could also mention the alien spaceship from "Godzilla 2000" as well, though I almost forgot about that one myself.
Now setting that aside, I do know this movie was originally released in the U.S. as "Godzilla vs. The Smog Monster". However, unlike the previous film in this marathon, which was "Gammera The Invincible", this one does have it's original name, and the option to watch either the English or Japanese version of this movie. And just for clarifications sake, I will be covering the English dub since I've never seen it before. (SPOILER: That clarification will age poorly)
One other quick thing I wanted to mention before I start watching this movie is something I noticed on the back of it's DVD case, where it brings up certain information that may end up hampering this movie a bit. See, this movie mentions how humans are "destroying the environment" which causes this monster, Hedorah, to make it's appearance. And part of me is fearing that it's potential messaging might hurt this movie. Not that I'm saying that it needs a message, however, if it over-eclipses this movie at all, I fear that it may end up destroying it.
Now I'm hoping that it's not the case and whatever messaging it wants to give out will be kept to a minimum. I'm certainly hoping for this movie to be really entertaining, but I won't know for sure unless I shut up and I push play, and I'm gonna do that right now. So, without further ado, it's time to kick back, relax, and check out "Godzilla vs. Hedorah".
3 minutes later
Well, guys, I am willing to say that this opening song here is actually halfway decent. You guys can't hear it for obvious reasons, but I'm actually kinda digging this opening song here. So, at least we're off to a decent start.
3 minutes later
Wait, so this kid actually thinks that the big tadpole the older guy caught earlier is from the same monster that was on their TV screen. How the fuck did he come to that conclusion? The only difference between the tadpole and that monster is that the monster had big red eyes. So again, I must ask, how does this kid know that the tadpole is also the same as that monster? I'm really curious here.
9 minutes later
So Godzilla's response to seeing all this shit that's been dumped in the water is to basically set it on fire with his breath. I don't really know if setting garbage on fire is actually to help things at all, but at least it would be a start, I guess. Oh, wait, apparently, it's all in this kid's dream. Well, even *if* Godzilla were to actually attempt it for real, I still don't think it would actually help much. But that's just me.
6 minutes later
You know, guys, this song here that this lady is singing sounds pretty cool. I just wish there were subtitles for this song because apparently the people who worked on the subtitles probably forgot to add them for some strange just reason. Just something I noticed is all.
11 minutes later
Hold up! Did this news anchor seriously just ask where did Hedorah come from? It came from the fucking water! OK yes, I know it's technically the sludge that we humans caused or some such BS, but just a moment ago, the news anchor mentioned that this could be the same Hedorah that destroyed the tankers, which also came from the water! Christ, I thought we already established at least this much already, but I guess not apparently.
8 minutes later
O...K, so Hedorah was just behind them the whole time. And it's also eating a bunch of cars at once with it's tentacles. At least now I know it feeds on more than just toxic gas.
2 minutes later
Oh, and Hedorah's effects are now having a full effect on people as I just saw a couple of them whither away into their skeletal forms. Well, that's certainly good and nasty, I'll say that.
13 minutes later
You know what, guys, I'm actually really happy to see Godzilla appear right now, because this film was starting to become a little bit dull. Mind you, it hasn't been horrible or anything, it's just nowhere near as good as I was hoping for it to be. Though I'll get into all that later when I start covering this movie.
5 minutes later
Sure, just keep throwing fire torches at Hedorah as he's slowly coming towards you, even though it's obviously not working. Oh...and now they're all just bones now thanks to Hedorah. Well, at least Hedorah is still making progress with their work for better or worse.
16 minutes later
So Godzilla used his atomic breath to activate the electrodes that the military set up in order to electrocute Hedorah. I didn't think that his atomic breath could actually work that way, but hey, at least it seems to be working.
2 minutes later
Wait, so this was the movie that Godzilla used his atomic breath to make himself fly like an air balloon? Well, I gotta say...it's just about as goofy as I remembered it to be when I saw that scene from a long time ago. I just didn't remember which movie it came from. But still, at least I know where that scene came from. Which is always cool to know.
The Review
Well, guys, that was "Godzilla vs. Hedorah". Let me go ahead and shut the movie off here...OK. Well, where to start with this one?
I might as well just start with writing. Now earlier, I mentioned that I skimmed the back of the DVD case for the synopsis of this movie's plot, and I noticed that it was going to play up it's messaging about stuff like how our pollution is killing the environment, which is how Hedorah gets born, and we should do more to save it. And I feared, going in, that it was going to be a ham-fisted message that would ultimately destroy this movie. So now that I've seen the whole film, how much of that does come into play? Well, I will say that while that messaging does appear here, it's not as heavy-handed as I thought it was going to be. For the most part, it's kept to a minimum. And like I said earlier, I don't have a problem with movies having a message, as long as it's not your primary concern when making your movie. And like I already said, this movie doesn't go too overboard with it's messaging. Which I'm always happy to see.
Now with that said, I want to talk about the film's tone next. Now I have a feeling that this movie was probably aimed towards kids, in a way. Allow me to explain. See, my theory is that this film was probably either the start of, or somewhere in the middle of the era, where the Godzilla franchise was at it's more goofiest. I say that, because this movie is trying to aim at being a light-hearted comedy, mixed in with some really goofy moments, such as the scene I mentioned earlier where Godzilla used his atomic breath to make himself as a literal hot-air balloon to fly. And I don't have a problem with that because Godzilla is easy to market towards kids, especially in Japan.
That being said, however, I feel like the filmmakers wanted to add in some of their own weird imagery to it that might not be suitable for children. A big example of that would be whenever you get to see the skeletal bodies of people after they were covered in Hedorah's smog, which is honestly really disturbing imagery, and I don't know how I would feel if I ever saw this movie as a kid for the first time back then. Maybe it was the norm back in 1971, I don't know, but, to me, it just feels like mixed messaging on what the filmmakers wanted to accomplish here with the film's tone. Also, the psychedelic stuff that they add in here is also kinda odd as well, although considering this movie came out in 1971, I probably shouldn't be too surprised that it's in here either.
One other problem I wanted to mention is the pacing, which, I will say that it's nowhere near as bad as it was in "Gammera The Invincible", where that film was just slow all over the place. However, that doesn't mean that this movie does not have that sort of problem, too. It's mainly an issue during the last fight between Godzilla and Hedorah, where it just kinda goes on for a bit too long for my tastes. That, and the bonfire sequence where most of the people just gather there to dance. The rest of the pacing here is fine, and what's funny about all this is that both this and "Gammera The Invincible" had the exact same runtime of 86 minutes, yet this movie was able to do it better than the former. Which is kinda ironic to me. Our characters are honestly just there, really. There's not much I can say about them, other than the fact that they just exist. They're not terribly annoying, mind you, they're just sorta forgettable, really.
But yeah, guys, the writing here is a little bit of a mixed bag. It's doesn't lean into being bad, but it is still a little bit flawed, what with the somewhat slow pacing and the story being a little bit too goofy at times. And also, the darker bits kinda get in the way of it, which is what makes the tone here feel uneven. But still, the writing here is passable. Now as for the acting, upon starting the film up, I ended up watching the Japanese dub with English subtitles. Now by choice, of course, since there's an English dub here, however, I opted to watch it with what was automatically given to me. And I will say the acting here is pretty good, save for the kid who is a big fan of Godzilla, and his acting is terrible. And being that he's a child actor, I feared that he was going to get more screentime of the entire cast. Thankfully, that's not entirely the case, as he gets about the same amount of screentime as most of the other main cast members in this movie do. Granted, that may not be saying much to credit due to his terrible acting skills, but at least it's still kinda minimal. So anyway, guys, for the most part, the acting here is pretty decent.
Special effects are actually pretty good. When it comes to the suitwork involving our main Kaiju's for this movie, both of them look pretty good. Godzilla, from this period, is a little more expressive here. Not so much in facial expressions, since it doesn't really change at all, but more his body language, since he doesn't act like a complete monster here. Speaking of, Hedorah is the complete opposite, since he is a total monster in this movie. And when it comes to the suitwork involving Hedorah, it actually looks pretty good, too. Although, and maybe this is just more of a pet peeve, I can kinda notice whenever Hedorah starts to jump, and you can obviously tell that it's someone's leg trying to make a jump. Now I can sorta forgive this one because I imagine it would be sorta difficult to try and design a creature that was originally a tadpole to begin with and it's mostly just a smog monster that doesn't really have legs. Though when you see it start to jump, you can't help but notice. At least, I did, anyway. And it's probably not gonna be noticed by anyone else unless you were someone like me who notices these sorts of details.
Other effects like the visual effects are pretty good, as is the miniatures as well. So yeah, special effects are pretty good overall. Camerawork here is fine, as is lighting and sound-mixing. And as for the music, well, it's kind of interesting, because most of it is pretty good. The opening song almost felt like a parody of a James Bond opening, and the other songs sound like the kind of music you would hear from the early 70's, such as the rock music that feels less like rock and more so like that weird hippie-style music. Mind you, when I say it's weird, I'm not saying that as a bad thing. It's actually pretty decent here. Granted, I'm not gonna be humming it anytime soon, but it's still pretty good for what was used for this movie. So I can give music here another positive.
Ultimately, guys, when all is said and done, am I able to recommend "Godzilla vs. Hedorah"? Kind of, yes. If you're someone who's into Godzilla movies and you haven't seen this one yet, then go ahead and check it out. If want to show this one to kids and they're also fans of Godzilla, then sure, I could probably recommend it as well, although I do have to warn you that some of the imagery in this movie that I talked about earlier might scare some kids. Though I'll leave that for you to decide. As for me, I thought it was just okay. I might give it another watch and see if it'll improve on future viewings. I'm not sure if it will or not, but I still kinda enjoyed this movie. So anyway, I'm gonna go and rewatch "Godzilla 2000", and see if that one actually has improved at all on a second viewing. Cause I haven't seen it since I reviewed it and I'm curious to know if it still holds up at all.
So anyway, guys, with that, we come to the close of another Reaction & Review. Until next time, ladies and gentlemen, take care, and I will see you all later. Peace.
